FODI vs CI

What is FODI? This is the acronym for Fuel Oil Distributor Inspections for Aboveground Tanks, either inside the premises or outside the premises.

The twenty point inspection is conducted by a TSSA Certified Petroleum Mechanic 3 (PM3) and looks at, for example, is the tank approved for its present use, does the tank appear to have been installed in accordance with the fuel oil code, are the tank vent and fill pipes properly installed and terminated, is the tank support system in good condition, and is the system free of leaks or any signs of weepage?

The inspection also covers the prevention of corrosion, the burner supply/return lines, valves, filters and piping material.

What is CI? This is a short form for Fuel Oil Distributor Inspections for Appliances – Comprehensive. This inspection covers furnaces, boilers and hot water heaters.

The fifteen point inspection is conducted by a TSSA Certified Oil Burner Technician 2 (OBT-2) and covers the appliance approval, if the installation is in accordance with the fuel oil code, the condition of the venting system, the condition of the heat exchanger, the refractory pot and heat shields, the clearances to combustibles and finally the chimney and its components.

The most important part of the inspection is the acceptability of the combustion analysis which tests for flue gas temperature, C02, C0 and combustion efficiency.
